Real life example:
Upcycling merch material on Hanse Sail

    Good to know
  • At a festival, an immense amount of material is used and deployed. Hanse Sail has established two circular solutions.

The Hanse Sail aims to avoid unnecessary single-use plastic and to reuse materials, keeping them in circulation for as long as possible. Therefore, upcycled banners are used as construction fence barriers at the Hanse Sail. Either the banners are produced without a year-specific print, or existing banners are upcycled and reused. One initiative that has developed from this approach is the production of upcycled bags made from old banners. These bags are manufactured locally in facilities for people with disabilities. These bags, made from old banners, are sewn into “captain’s bags” and handed out to each ship participating in the Hanse Sail. In addition, reusable elastic ties have been introduced as a measure to replace single-use cable ties.

2022

Reusable cable ties

Our plastic-free cable ties are reusable elastic straps, which we have been using since 2022 by the thousands to secure construction fence banners, promotional materials, and similar items.

2025

Upcycled banners

This year alone, approximately 150 of the upcycled bags made from old banners have been produced – each one a unique piece.
