Several covers for better sorting quality have been installed in the area of the Shanties Festival. During the three days of the event, the sorting behaviour between labelled bins without a cover and labelled bins with covers attached has been monitored. The covers are made out of Corroplast, which is more resistant than paper and can be easily cleaned and disinfected. They are printed on plain sheets, which then get bent into the right shape. For storage they can be folded back flat. The covers have been installed on the regular 240l bins of the cleaning company.
Design
The design of the covers has been developed in accordance to secure good visibility of examples related to each specific fraction. This contributes on one hand to a better understanding of which product goes to which bin and on the other hand teaches about the right disposal behaviour of a variety of displayed products.
Preparation
The design of the covers has been sent to a company for printing and slicing the Corroplast sheets.
Execution
The covers have been bent in shape and installed. They got fixated with cable ties to hold them in place.
Evaluation
The covers can be used for subsequent events after some cleaning. There has been no clean paper waste. Plastic packaging was the best sorted fraction. A deposit system is in place so there are no disposable cups. Visitors were satisfied, but there was a noticeable lack of knowledge regarding sorting. Information boards and bin covers were very helpful, allowing them to learn which waste to throw in which bin. Waste was worst sorted in bins marked only by colour and a word.

Learnings
Learnings and next steps for the upcoming year
Types of Bins
The number of fractions will be lowered for the next pilot. Plastic, residue and glass will be collected.
Communication
Waste separation in public only works if your audience is aware. We have to be very clear in our communication and teach the people how to sort the fractions properly to secure good results in the future.
Service
Convince a cleaning service provider to collect the sorted waste separately. The cleaning company struggles logistically a lot with that many different resources to collect. Additionally, the sorting quality right now is not accurate enough to use it as the resource it should be.
